Presentation
After having typed the site’s url, you’ll come across this home page from where you can sign up to the Scratch community (which is essential to save and share your projects) or where you can login. On this page you can also create a story (“Create”), explore other users’ projects (“Explore”), find useful tips on the use of the app (“Useful Tips”), find information about Scratch (“Info”) or you can use the search bar.
The following sections describe the single actions: “Create” : this page is dedicated to the realization of your own projects. The page presents itself as shown below; it’s possible to add backgrounds and sprites clicking on the icons at the bottom of the page. Backgrounds and sprites can be chosen from the gallery offered by Scratch, drawn, uploaded from the computer or can be a photo taken by your webcam. The box on the right refers to the programming of the backgrounds and the sprites and is divided in “Script”, “Costumes” and “Sounds”. “Script” allows you to assemble the various programming blocks; you can do this by selecting the desired sprite and dragging it in the programming block that you wish to apply inside the blank board on the right. Instructions are available and are grouped in different categories according to the features provided. “Costumes” allows your sprite its costume in the various animation. “Sounds” allows you to match sounds to each of your sprites, by choosing them from the Scratch library, recording them or choosing a file from your own pc. In the sidebar on the right you can navigate through the different tutorials that offer useful step by step tips on the procedures that you need to follow for an optimal creation based on your selections. You can give a title to your project by clicking on the sidebar in the top left of the screen. Once you’ve finished your work, you can save it and, if you want, share it on the Scratch community.
“Explore” : on this page you can view all the finished and shared projects by the users of the community by clicking on “projects” or “gallery” that are divided in categories. You can view a specific animation that interests you, see how it was programed and, if you want, modify it to then save it in your account (the original will not be affected); in the same way, other users can do the same with your projects once you have shared them.
“Useful Tips” : in this page you can start creating Scratch projects using the online tutorial, downloading the PDF guide or the sheets which you have to pay for.
At the bottom of the page there are two other important sections: “Editor Offline”: which allows you to download your work and work on it offline; “Questions”: where you can find helpful answers to the most frequently asked questions and where you can access to a help forum.
“Info”: on this page there is information on what Scatch is, what its used for and who uses is. You can find all the information and the curiosities of the app, including personalised ones for parents and teachers, and links to other pages containing further useful information on Scratch.
At the end of each of the above described pages, you can explore the site map with all the sections that can be reached. Furthermore, there is also a scroll-down menu that allows you to select a language.
